I recently finished reading an incredible book. I can't even remember how I happened upon the lovely Emma Mildon, perhaps through mindbodygreen, but I am so happy that I found her. Her book "The Soul Searcher's Handbook" is very clever - it basically breaks down every spiritual, New Age, some-may-call-woo-woo practice that one can think of and it explains to you how to incorporate them into your own modern lifestyle.
Let's take Astrology - most people are into it, comfortable with it, maybe even curious about it. But what about your Astrological House? Seriously, people, it gets even more interesting within this new layer of astrology! And what about Angel Guides? I know...I can imagine your face...no, not in a religious sense, but a spiritual one. I'm sure you've had a moment or twenty where you've thought "Phew, thanks Guardian Angel." Well, that's essentially what an Angel Guide is. Did you know you could actually invoke their spirit? Well, you can, and Emma tells you how. As someone who, since a very young age, has been interested in all things new-agey, the book was one part refresher for me; some chapters I read quickly, having had prior knowledge of the matter. However, the deeper I dove into the book, the more I discovered - and thus needed to slow down. It was kismet, serendipity, happenstance, whatever you want to call it, that I happened to discover this book during my year of Saturn Return, and funny enough [if I recall correctly] Emma was in hers when she was writing this book. I love that it's filled with quick facts about specific topics, inspirational quotes, infographics, etc. Her writing style is easy to follow and truly feels like she's speaking directly to you, and her humor is quirky and entertaining. It's an accessible book for newbies, oldbies, and any crazy rebel who refuses to read a book from front to back and instead flips around. So wherever you are on your own spiritual journey, this book is for you. I highly suggest you pick up a copy to introduce yourself to your spiritual side - or to reconnect with it! xx S Let's talk about nurturing ourselves. How many times throughout the day do we do things that maybe we don't feel like doing? At work, it could be a task that stresses us out, at home it could be vacuuming. How often throughout the day do we really engage in something we love? I'm going to generalize a bit, but it seems like for those of us that work full-time we have maybe some time in the mornings or evenings to devote to simple pleasures; even then, however, those times can fill up with other daily tasks like preparing meals or picking out our outfit for the day. My husband and I nixed our cable box a little over a month ago - shocking, I know. How could one possibly live without Food Network and HGTV?! (Giada and Ina, I miss you so) It's been an adjustment, sure, and now that I've caught up on my Netflix queue I'm finding more time to read or even start organizing my material goods. We purchased an antenna, and we also have Hulu Plus and the hubs's XBOX, but I find usually there isn't really anything I want to watch on TV. I've tried to be more mindful of how I spend my minutes each day, although full disclosure we are kind of addicted to playing Fallout 4. How am I being more mindful? I'm taking my own advice that I offer my students: set limits. I will pick a time and stick to it as my end point for whatever task I'm doing, and then I will either work on something that needs to be done, or go to something more relaxing. For example, let's run with the Fallout 4 addiction that's surging in my home: I'll get home from work and my husband I will likely play after dinner, so around 6:30 or 7pm. I know that I need time to unwind and put my body into rest mode, so I'll say that at 8:15pm it's my cutoff time, and that's when I'll shower, prep my bag or even meals for the next day, and hop in bed to read before falling asleep around 10pm. I could very well easily get sucked into playing until 9:30pm, quickly shower and get in bed to try to force myself to sleep, but then I'll toss and turn for at least 45 minutes; I know my body and I know what it needs - and what it doesn't.
I suppose that's another big part of it, identifying what our body needs to nurture ourselves. For me, it's at least 7 hours of sleep, eating balanced healthy meals (more veggies, less carbs and meats, significantly less dairy and alcohol), and incorporating time for things that I enjoy doing, like exercise, reading, and writing in this blog. We can make the time, we just have to be more mindful and strict with ourselves. Look at your weekly routine, maybe even just pick one day, and figure out when you could put in an extra 30 minutes devoted to doing something you love, something to nurture your self and your soul. And then do it! Hold yourself accountable. See if you can make it a regular habit, and reap those benefits gloriously. xx S Hello loves! Just a quick post - I promise I'm actually working on two other posts that will be up shortly. But first, the holidays are coming! And shoot are they coming up fast. A friend of mine (hi Britt!) connected me to this site and I am obsessed with it. It is so refreshing to find stylishly designed pieces that don't contribute to horrific working environments or death for the creators of each piece. Here is their handy gifts-that-give-back guide for women, and for men here. Enjoy and happy shopping!
